La Directora del Instituto para la Atención e Inclusión de las Personas con Discapacidad, Lourdes Rodarte Díaz, explicó que dicha acción es promovida por la organización civil Special Olympics, en los 175 países donde tiene presencia. 

En 2018, Special Olympics cumplió 50 años de existencia y, para celebrar el hecho, fue declarado el Día Mundial de la Inclusión, al cual, se sumó la Ciudad de México iluminando el Ángel de la Independencia. 

La convocatoria incluye las ciudades de los países donde Special Olympics tiene presencia, ya que se trata del movimiento deportivo más grande del mundo que integra a personas con discapacidad intelectual y promueve su inclusión social. 

Entre los eventos en los que el Estado de Zacatecas ha sobresalido están los juegos mundiales de verano e invierno, que se llevan a cabo cada dos años de manera intercalada.
